I was approached by a mother and daughter to curate a day-long workshop itinerary to a particular criteria. The daughter had just recently started working with copper and wanted to expand those skills and learn some more. She let me know what she wanted to learn and what she already knew; I posed a few additional questions to help her decide what it was that they could make! After confessing their love for nature, a little plan started forming in my head. We shall make a delicate little bunch of flowers! We will keep them small so that they have time to do more than one, and we’ll use miniature bottles as little vases.
And that is what we did! We made three flowers: a little bud opening, a double layer flower of their choosing, and a single layer flower to add another technique in there. We covered piercing, filing, forming, soldering, balling up wire and talked about even more techniques in between instruction! After a day of making (with a speedy lunch in the middle and, of course, tea and biscuit intervals), they both came away with 3 little flowers – in addition to ideas for more and plans for the next workshop already!
If you’d like to try this workshop, the details for the day are as follows: the workshop is £150pp. It’s a full day workshop, which is usually booked in for a Sunday (but can take place during the week if preferred) and runs from 11am to 5pm. All materials are supplied for you, including the little glass bottle. Lunch isn’t included, but you may drink all the teas and coffees you can - plenty of biscuits too! If you’ve got a different idea for a technique you want to learn or an object/piece of jewellery you want to make, get in touch via emily@the-metalsmith.co.uk! Even if it’s not something that is listed on my website, I frequently put together bespoke workshops and would be delighted to put together one just for you.
