‘Surplus’ is a work in progress; it is a culmination of research and exploratory work. Recently, I have become increasingly aware of where the things that we accumulate come from, and where they might end up. It is easy to not think about such concepts. The information is not presented to us; oftentimes you need to know of something’s existence in order to know to look for it. My research consists of learning about metal’s origins and stories in order to make sure the work that I create causes as little harm to people and planet. Using the practical elements of the project, I wish to create pieces worth capturing attention and inspiring conversations to encourage folks to think more about this notion. Considering the subject matter starts and ends with ‘people’, this is also the focus of the imagery. The pieces are made of an assortment of materials that I already have; 10% will go to a relevant charity supporting folks in the global south dealing with waste.
Exhibited at Silver+Form in Margate.
Upcoming exhibitions: Designer Craft at Bankside (London) and 6Artist Collective (Farnham).
